Kiyaan Lavji is a 16-year-old student enrolled in an all-French IB program. From a young age, Kiyaan was exposed to various instruments, but his passion has always been playing the tabla. He has been fortunate to participate in numerous arts competitions, including both the Regional and National Festival, and will be representing Canada in Dubai in 2025.
Kiyaan has been studying Classical Tabla for 8 years, primarily in the Lucknow gharana. He has studied under Ujjal Roy ji, a professional tabla player of the Lucknow gharana and a disciple of the late Pt. Ashoke Moitra, Pt. Swapan Chaudhuri, and Pt. Swaraj Bhattacharyya. Embracing the classical route in tabla offers a profound journey into the heart of musical tradition and discipline. By dedicating oneself to classical training, you have the ability to transform from an inexperienced musician to a professional artist, all while building a strong foundation of essential techniques and rhythmic structures, which are crucial for mastering the art of tabla.
Kiyaan has performed for notable figures such as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in 2018, Prince Amyn Aga Khan, Premier Doug Ford, and Mayor John Tory at the groundbreaking ceremonies for Generations Canada. Kiyaan, alongside a few artists composed a rendition of "Child of the Ocean" and presented it to Prince Hussain as a gift to him.
